Personal
I have been a lawyer in private law practice, a law firm founder and senior partner, and an executive of a public biotechnology company.
Alternative dispute resolution methods can be desirable approaches to resolving complex problems encountered by businesses and business people. Features of privacy, enhanced control by the parties, and preservation of on-going relationships can lead to better outcomes.
Law Practice and Dispute Resolution Experience
I have been an active member of the Seattle legal community for over forty years, including twenty-three years in a law firm of which I was a founder. I have had extensive experience in business related litigation, including state and federal court trials and appeals. Areas of particular interest included representations of directors and officers in bank and savings association failures that resulted in claims of securities violations and mismanagement; claims of breach of non-competition agreements and wrongful use of trade secrets, claims of civil rights violations and claims involving contracts in various contexts.
My law practice regularly included mediations and arbitrations, where my role was that of advocate or neutral. I engage in alternative dispute resolution education on a continuing basis. I am a member of the American Arbitration Association (commercial) panel of neutrals and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Roster of Arbitrators (FINRA Dispute Resolution).
Business Experience
In addition to my experience in private law practice, I served four years at Dendreon Corporation as its senior vice president for corporate affairs, general counsel, and corporate secretary. When I joined Dendreon, a biotechnology company, it was privately held. We took Dendreon public and positioned its lead product candidate, a therapeutic cancer vaccine, for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. My responsibilities at Dendreon included problem solving, a lead role in our collaboration with a Japanese partner, the creation of a process for evaluating and managing Dendreon's risk environment, and the establishment of company policy regarding alternative dispute resolution. I also conceived and negotiated a collaboration for scientific research between Dendreon and Northern Michigan University.
Faculty Experience
University of Washington Business For International Professionals program where I teach the International Finance and International Law (with emphasis on alternative dispute resolution methods) segments of this ten week course for graduate students and working professionals, most of whom are from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Germany. I have also taught parts of this course to Emirati students at the UAE Academy in Abu Dhabi.
Educational Experience
My education includes law school at the University of Wisconsin, undergraduate school at Northern Michigan University, and active duty as an infantry officer in the U. S. Marine Corps.
